Emirates finally arrived to Mexico City today after a huge legal battle with the local flight carrier, Aeromexico.

Aeromexico tried to argue that it would be detrimental to the national airline industry.

The Emirates flight from Dubai to Mexico City through Barcelona got here finally.

I’m glad, because Aeromexico needs big competitors, specially on international flights. Currently Barcelona is only served by Aeromexico directly and by Iberia through Madrid. Spain in general was only served by Aeromexico and Iberia.

Years ago, four different companies, Aeromexico, Air Europa, Mexicana, and Iberia served routes to Spain from the Mexican capital, making the market more competitive. Nowadays it’s reduced to Aeromexico and Iberia; and prices are ridiculous. Flying to Madrid from Los Angeles is cheaper despite Los Angeles being further away from Madrid than Mexico City.

So, as a state sponsored uncompetitive airline arrives, all I have to say is, fuck you, Aeromexico.

Consumers ( like you in this case) only care about ticket prices. There is a reason why there are now only 2 airlines serving the route and one of your mentioned airlines is long gone...

Costs are going to get cut everywhere, meaning shittier service, shittier conditions for your country men and woman working in Aeromexico, likely drop in safety standards due cost cutting and shittier working conditions and who knows, even  the demise of Aeromexico since competition with Emirates is severely unbalanced.

I get it, you want to fly cheap and probably both Aeromexico and Iberia have a healthy profit margin. But letting in Emirates is kind of like letting in a non-indigenous species to combat a plague of something.... It might very well bite you in the ass later on. People should have simply voted with their wallets and time to send a message. S top using the direct route, spend some extra time going a longer way around, et voila.

I understand that competing with Emirates is practically impossible as it is a state sponsored enterprise that has no interest in making money. However, Aeromexico used to be just that way until 2011; and it grew killing other airlines as well while not being profitable at all. The same is true of Iberia.

Nowadays, Delta owns a controlling stake in Aeromexico, and British Airways owns a controlling stake in Iberia.

What bothers me about Aeromexico and Iberia is that they offer terrible service on the route (Iberia more than Aeromexico) and prices are simply too high; the same flight from LAX is 25% cheaper (I know ticket prices fluctuate, but I chose the flight on the same day in more than six months for the comparison ), and it’s simply unbelievable that they charge consumers that much. Prices were lower with Mexicana and Air Europa in the game, and service was significantly better.

Emirates in a sense will make Aeromexico and Iberia get back on their game; because economy on Emirates is better than economy on Aeromexico and certainly better than economy on Iberia; yet the prices for the seats are very similar.

Aeromexico didn’t fight Emirates because they’re a suffering underdog; they did it because they practically own our FAA; and they own more than half of the landing spots at MEX. Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire.

The problem here is that airlines nowadays are run by accountants. Don’t think for a minute that whatever they have to drop the price to will affect the bottom line much, they will just take that out of the people working for the company. Meaning you will likely not see any improvement in service as the staff is going to be asked to do the same job for less compensation. At worst it will affect service, but more important, safety, in a negative way.

Cheap tickets come at a cost.

So then I should conform to an incompetitive market in the off chance that the accountants give the money to the employees?(which they wont anyway)

Im not even asking for cheap tickets; I just want competitve pricing... Iberia ten years ago probably charged a bit more accounting for inflation but they had two full meals and fewer seats on the flight (better leg room)

But there were four companies competing; and it was healthier than this duopoly

Aeromexico’s holding company is 49% owned by Delta Air Lines. They have good reason to argue against Emirates operations in that area, as big E is state funded. Saudi princes argue it is not and it’s just their own personal investment, however it is state money they are using and they care not about any losses, only about prestige of owning and operating such a thing. Therefore, look for not only E to put competition pressure on Aeromexico but economic as well due to some potentially unfair business practice exploitation. I am very curious what permits Emitrates obtained and how.

Volaris is also in business, as a low cost carrier. That’s some pressure, but E is going to try a big squeeze.

Mexico City airport is at-capacity; so getting landing rights is hard. What Emirates got permission to do was to operate a route from Barcelona to Mexico City (with the whole service being Dubai-Barcelona-Mexico City), and it is allowed under the 5th freedom of the air.

What Aeromexico argued is that Emirates was being abusive as no one wants to fly from Mexico to Dubai, but loads of people want to fly from Mexico to Barcelona, and of course that Emirates is a state owned airline with no intention of being competitive.

What consumer groups argued, and what E mirates argued, is that it is unnatural for a couple of airlines to have such control of the market, and that if Emirates had the landing rights and our international conventions make us respect the 5th freedom of the air , then there was nothing else to discuss.

Emirates is the only Middle Eastern airline to serve Mexico City, and we also get service from Turkish Airlines, Hainan, and China Southern.... none of those are exactly profitable airlines.... and they abuse of state budgets to gain market share.

The Mexico City-Madrid route is the 5th busiest international route and only two airlines serve it... it stands out for being a duopoly.
